Cosmetic Dentistry

Are braces difficult to wear?

Braces are small metal brackets that hold a wire in place. They are easy to maintain and eat with. We also offer clear braces and clear aligners like Invisalign and Clear Correct. These clear aligners allow us to move your teeth without braces. These aligners can be removed when eating or for pictures.

When should I consider braces?

When your teeth are in a poor position and it is difficult to eat, or when your front teeth give you a poor smile. You may also consider braces when you notice excessive wear.

What is an all porcelain crown or veneer?

An all porcelain crown is all porcelain with no metal. All porcelain crowns or veneers are used for anterior (front) teeth. The posterior (back) teeth usually have a metal base with porcelain over the metal for esthetic reasons. The metal base helps to make the posterior crowns stronger for chewing. A crown or veneer is fabricated in a dental laboratory using accurate impressions taken by Dr. Zietz.

What is bonding and how is it different from a veneer?

Bonding is the placement of tooth-like material onto the structure of the tooth to build it up or reshape it. A disadvantage to bonding is that it will discolor over time and is more prone to breakage. Veneers are porcelain, will not discolor and are permanent with proper care.

Hygiene/Periodontal Disease

Why do I need my teeth cleaned?

Our teeth are covered with a stick film of bacteria called plaque. Brushing and flossing after meals and snacks help to remove most of the plaque, but a minor amount is left behind. Plaque that is not removed hardens into calculus (tartar) that cannot be removed with brushing or flossing. When calculus collects along the gum line and in between our teeth it cases the tissue to become irritated and inflamed. Getting your teeth cleaned regularly helps minimize the plaque from forming into hard calculus. Everyone is made up differently. Therefore the recall for cleanings can vary depending on the amount of calculus one forms. We have recalls every 3 months, 4 months or 6 months.
